Fifty years ago, the United States launched its fifth astronaut into space. Walter "Wally" Schirra rode "Sigma 7," his Mercury capsule atop an Atlas rocket to circle the Earth six times on Oct. 3, 1962. The 9-hour mission was the longest to date for a U.S. flight.
