Citizen Daniel and the Call of America

This web site relates to the book Citizen Daniel (1775-1835) and the Call of America: Early Correspondence of the Constables of Horley, by Brian Jenkins. The book is based on the letters and journals of two brothers from England, Daniel and William Constable, who sailed to America in 1806 with their dog, Frank, and traveled, mostly on foot or by boat, from Niagara Falls to New Orleans. They kept detailed records of their travels and wrote extensive letters home (and kept those they received). They befriended Thomas Paine, were at the opening of the Erie Canal with Lafayette, and unwittingly participated in the Aaron Burr conspiracy. They returned to England in 1808. Their sister and her husband moved to Indiana in 1819, then settled in Pittsford, New York. Daniel himself returned to America in 1820, traveled extensively, moved to Pittsford, and applied for citizenship. A truly amazing record of a particularly wondrous time in our nation's history.
